ResourcesMoving provinces for work can be a great career step. A little planning keeps it from getting overwhelming.
Before you accept
- Ask whether the employer helps with moving costs
- Compare the cost of living, especially rent
- Check whether your licence or certification carries over, or needs to be registered in the new province
Before you move
- Give notice at your current job and your landlord
- Book movers or a truck early, especially for summer moves
- Keep receipts: some moving expenses may be deductible on your taxes
After you arrive
- Apply for your new provincial health card right away (some provinces have a waiting period)
- Exchange your driver's licence within the time your new province allows
- Update your address with the Canada Revenue Agency, your bank and your employer
