Pay
Reading a job offer before you say yes
An offer letter is more than a salary. What to check, what to ask, and how to respond professionally.

PayGetting an offer is great news. Take a day to read it carefully before you sign.
What to check
- **Job title and duties:** do they match what you discussed?
- **Pay:** the rate, how often you're paid, and whether overtime is paid
- **Hours and schedule:** guaranteed hours, shifts and weekends
- **Start date and probation:** how long the probation period is
- **Benefits:** health, dental, vacation, pension or RRSP matching, and when they start
Ask for it in writing
If anything was promised in the interview but isn't in the letter, ask for it to be added.
It's okay to ask questions
Asking about hours, benefits or a start date doesn't put an offer at risk. Employers expect it.
Negotiating
If the pay is lower than you hoped, it's fair to ask once, politely, with a reason: your experience, a certification, or pay for similar roles in your area.
Respond on time
Accept or decline by the date given, and confirm in writing.
