SafetyMost workers in Canada are covered by their province's or territory's employment standards. Some industries, like banks, airlines and trucking across provinces, are covered by federal rules instead.
The basics most workers are entitled to
- At least the minimum wage for your province or territory
- Overtime pay after a set number of hours
- Breaks during longer shifts
- Paid public holidays and vacation time
- Written notice or pay if you're let go without cause, after a minimum period of work
The details differ by province, so check your provincial employment standards website.
A safe workplace
You have the right to know about hazards, to take part in health and safety at work, and to refuse unsafe work.
If something isn't right
Keep a record of your hours and pay stubs. Talk to your employer first if you can. If that doesn't work, you can contact your provincial employment standards office.
